Bulletin 82: Trend Connect

Trend Connect is a remote connectivity solution that uses the 3G and GPRS mobile networks to provide secure and reliable Ethernet connectivity across the globe. It is managed and administered by a dedicated Trend team.

Providing a remote Ethernet connection to any Trend BEMS is now very easily achieved, without the need for either a broadband line or use of an organisation’s core IT network. The newly introduced Trend Connect service is a simple to implement, fully managed global connectivity solution that enables fast, reliable and secure data communications over the 3G and GPRS cellular networks. It allows comprehensive system monitoring and  management from any internet connection, as well as giving access to the complete range of Trend post-occupancy services.

Lower Infrastructure costs
Being able to remotely support a recently installed Trend Building Energy Management System (BEMS) would significantly reduce the need to visit site to support the commissioning and hand over of the site to the occupants. Because it is a fully portable solution, once the project is complete Trend Connect can either be left installed or taken off site and used where required.

Secure and reliable Ethernet connectivity
Within the firewalled secure zone BEMS data is sent and received using Machine 2 Machine (M2M) cellular networks using the highest speed data carrier, High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) which runs at 7.2 Mbit/s. Where this network is not available then it will move down to High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HDSPA), then too Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) then to
Enhanced Data GSM Environment) EDGE and then down to GPRS which runs at 48 Kbps. So there is always a data network available.

When connecting to the network it uses IPSEC Virtual Private Networking (VPN) technology to provide secure connections from a standard Microsoft Windows computer to your Trend BEMS allowing you to use all the Trend products such as 963 Supervisor or System Engineering Tool (SET) .

Rapid deployment of devices
Trend Connect is installed simply by plugging the modem into the mains, connecting and mounting its antenna and connecting its Ethernet cable to the BEMS. All that is left then is for Trend to remotely configure the BEMS device that the modem has been linked to and data communications can begin. The service can be up and running within 24 - 48 hrs. Enables full post occupancy support by Trend and its partners Remote monitoring and adjustment of the BEMS can be carried out from a Trend 963 supervisor sited anywhere with an internet connection.

Single point of contact for communications management
Importantly, Trend Connect provides customers with a single point of contact for communications issues relating to their Trend systems. It frees them from having to deal with either a broadband provider or their own IT department, who in any case may not permit BEMS traffic on its core network, particular if it emanates from a remote site.

Promotes integrated solutions led by Trend and its partners
Trend Connect enables full Ethernet connectivity to your IQ3 or IQ2 via EINC or 3Extend Trend BEMS allowing you to use all of Trend current range of software products and services.

24 Hour support through Energy & Support Solutions Team
All of the remote services offered by Trend’s Energy Support & Solutions Team are available through Trend Connect. These include online energy monitoring and targeting (Trend Energy Manager), automatic BEMS performance monitoring and reporting (IQEye) and 24hr remote response to system alarms.

Flexible & portable solution
Convenient mechanism for temporary monitoring of sites during the installation and commissioning phases of a Trend BEMS and provides a great tool when conducting energy audits. Everything from one Partner Customers can now source both their BEMS and remote monitoring requirements from one Trend Partner, reducing hand-over time and minimising contracts.
